12THGHUCG2022 TRACK: MICROBIOTA
What is the gut microbiota?
The gut microbiota is a vast and complex collection of microorganisms that have a significant impact on human health. Previously, the gut microbiota was referred to as gut microflora.
The gut microbiota helps with a variety of bodily functions.
1) Obtaining energy from digested food warding off pathogens
2) Immune function regulation
3) Gut and intestine biochemical barrier strengthening
Changes in the composition of the microbiota can have an impact on these functions.
While beneficial bacteria exist in the gut, harmful bacteria can enter the GI tract and cause infection. Food poisoning and other gastrointestinal diseases that cause diarrhea and vomiting are examples of these infections.

What is the significance of the human microbiota?
Microorganisms are essential to human life and perform a variety of critical functions. In fact, there are roughly ten times more Trusted Source bacterial cells in the gastrointestinal system than human cells.
- asthma
- autistic spectrum disorder
- cancer
- celiac disease
- diabetes
- eczema
- heart disease
- malnutrition
- multiple sclerosis
- obesity
Where can you find microbiota?
Microbes existed before humans did. The intestine is thought to be one of the most densely populated microbial habitats on the planet. Other microbes can be found in the nose, mouth and throat, small intestine, lungs, vagina, and skin of humans.
What makes the microbiota so crucial?
Gut microbiome has a variety of roles to play.
Defense:
· It protects against dangerous bacteria.
· It helps the immune system distinguish between friends and enemies.
· It breaks down harmful substances.
Nutrition:
· It can break down some meals that people can’t digest, such dietary fibre.
· Dietary fibre is broken down by the gut bacteria, which creates significant compounds (such short-chain fatty acids) with advantages outside of the gut.
· It enhances dietary mineral absorption (e.g., magnesium, calcium and iron).
· It produces several necessary vitamins, such as vitamin K and folate (B9), as well as amino acids (i.e., the building blocks of proteins).
Behaviour:
· It can influence how you feel and act.
Given its crucial roles, scientists now refer to the gut microbiota as a “organ.”

When does the development of the gut microbiota begin?
It was previously believed that the human microbiome began to colonise the gut at birth, but some researchers have suggested that commensal bacteria may be passed from mother to kid across the placental barrier. The earliest bacteria to colonise babies may have originated from the mother’s mouth microbiome.
Early-life delivery modality has a significant impact on the gut flora. An infant born vaginally is initially colonised by the mother’s vaginal and gut microbiota. In contrast, the skin and hospital environment bacteria are first introduced to the baby during a Caesarean procedure. Rectal mother-to-child bacterial transmission is also suggested by recent studies.
